はじめに
今回は、初級読者向けに書かれた、アメリカで刊行された絵本に対して授与される権威ある文学賞の１つ、セオドア・スース・ガイゼル賞（Theodor Seuss Geisel Award）についてご紹介させていただきます。
以前ご紹介したコールデコット賞や、コレッタ・スコットキング賞作品よりも、初級読者向けに書かれた本に贈られる賞です。
英語の多読を始めたばかりの方に適したレベルの本が多いです。
ガイゼル賞（セオドア・スース・ガイゼル賞）とは？
今回、特に参考にさせていただいたのは、以下のWikipediaの情報です。
このページの説明によると、ガイゼル賞について、以下のように説明されています。
The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award is a literary award by the American Library Association (ALA) that annually recognizes the "author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year."[1]
The award is named for Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, who once said, "Children want the same things we want: to laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and delighted."[2] It was established in 2004 and inaugurated in 2006 for 2005 publications.[2]
A few runners up are termed Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Books; their authors and illustrators receive certificates.
つまり、前年度に米国で出版された英語による初級読者向けの本の中で最も優れた著者とイラストレーター」を表彰する文学賞とのことです。
そして、あの有名なDr Seuss（スース博士）にちなんだ賞で、2006年から、2005年の出版物に対して表彰が始まったとのことです。
これまでご紹介した、コールデコット賞、ケイト・グリーナウェイ賞、コレッタ・スコット・キング賞と比較して、かなり最近始まったばかりの賞ということですね。
また、年間で１冊にガイゼル賞が授与されて、数冊が次点であるオナー賞を授与されるというのは、コールデコット賞や、コレッタ・スコット・キング賞と同じですね。
このガイゼル受賞作品には、下のメダルが記されます。絵本を選ぶ時の「お墨付き」の参考になりますね。オナー賞の場合は、銀色となります。
