今回は、人間や家族をテーマにし、民族や社会の多様性を重視する絵本作家とイラストレーターに授与されるエズラ・ジャック・キーツ賞についてご紹介させていただきます。

エズラ・ジャック・キーツ賞とは？

今回、特に参考にさせていただいたのは、以下のEzra Jack Keats Foundationさんの公式ウエブサイトです。

このEzra Jack Keats Foundationによると、エズラ・ジャック・キーツ賞について、以下のように説明されています。

The Ezra Jack Keats Award was created to nurture illustrators and writers, early in their careers, who create extraordinary books that reflect our diverse population, the universal experience of childhood and the strength of family and community. Over the years the EJK has succeeded in fostering the early careers of many of our country’s leading children’s book makers.

つまり、多様な人々、子ども時代の経験、家族やコミュニティの強さを反映した本を創作する、キャリアの浅いイラストレーターや作家を育成するために設立された賞ということです。

差し詰め、人間や家族をテーマにした作品の新人賞といったところでしょうか。

また、この賞の独自性の一つとして、以下が書かれています。

It is the only award that celebrates books that embrace all ethnic and social groups.

つまり、多様な民族と社会的グループを称える唯一の賞である、ということです。

また、

The EJK Award was first given in 1986 to celebrate new authors and illustrators of picture books that reflect the universal qualities of childhood and the multicultural nature of our world.

とあるように、1986年から授与が始まったとのことです。コールデコット賞や、ケイト・グリーナウェイ賞や、コレッタ・スコット・キング賞よりは遅いですね。

なお、この賞は、コレッタ・スコット・キング賞と同様、作家部門とイラストレーター部門があります。

このエズラ・ジャック・キーツ賞の受賞作品には、下のメダルが記されます。絵本を選ぶ時の「お墨付き」の参考になりますね。オナー賞の場合は、銀色となります。
