6月も中盤になりましたが、いかがお過ごしでしょうか。
今回は、多読と関連する"narrow reading"に関する論文をご紹介したいと思います。"narrow reading"とは、同じトピックの本（英文）を読むことを指します。つまり、「アメリカの公民権運動」や、「地球温暖化」など、特定のトピックを決めて、そのトピックに関連した本や英文を読むことをいいます。
今回ご紹介するのは、narrow readingが、語彙習得に果たす意義について論じたSchmitt & Carter (2000)による研究論文です。
論文のデータ
今回ご紹介する論文は、以下です。これまで200くらいの論文などに引用されている、とても有名な論文の一つです。

論文の内容のご紹介
まず、この論文では、narrow readingについて、以下のように定義をして、その意義を述べています。
Narrow reading is reading on the same topic over the course of a number of texts. One advantage of narrow reading is that readers become familiar with the topic and have much better background knowledge for future passages on that topic. Another advantage has to do with the mechanics of vocabulary distribution. Key words in topic-related passages tend to recur, easing the lexical burden on readers as they become familiar with this vocabulary (Hwang & Nation, 1989). (p. 5)
つまり、同じトピックの英文をたくさん読むことによって、背景知識が豊かになり、読解が容易になったり、そのトピックでよく使われる語彙の習得が期待できると述べています。
この研究では、
- ダイアナ元王妃の死去に関する記事から集めた新聞記事9つ（7,843語）
- 政治、金融、武力衝突など様々なトピックの新聞記事9つ（7,843語）
の2セットを用意し、英文中の語彙の使用状況などを調査しました。
つまり、１番はダイアナ元王妃に関するnarrow readingの条件を整えた英文セットとなります。
その主な研究結果は、以下のように書かれています。
- Not only are there a greater number of different high-frequency content words in the Diana texts, but the total number of their occurrences is far greater as well (77% greater). (p. 6)
- the Other news stories contained 2,224 types, whereas the Diana stories contained only 2,068. (p. 6)
- over 41% of the proper nouns recur eight or more times in the Diana stories, whereas less than 16% recur in the Other stories. (p. 7)
つまり、ダイアナ元王妃の英文セットは、様々なトピックの英文セットよりも、
①多くの異なる内容語（名詞、動詞、形容詞、副詞など）が含まれ、それらの使用回数も多かったこと
②使われていた語彙の種類が少なく、その分、同じ語彙を繰り返し使用していたこと
③様々なトピックで構成される英文セットでは固有名詞のうち16%が8回以上繰り返し使用されていたのに対し、ダイアナ元王妃の英文セットでは固有名詞のうち41%が8回以上使用されていたこと
が指摘されています。
要するに、narrow readingをすることで（トピックを同じにした英文を読むことで）、固有名詞を含め同じ語彙の繰り返しが多くなり、様々なトピックを含む英文よりも語彙的な負担が 軽くなるということです。
語彙の繰り返しにより、語彙の定着が進むことは以前より指摘されていますので、気に入ったシリーズやトピックを読むことは、語彙の習得によさそうですね。
